Piraeus Bank and MOUZENIDIS TRAVEL leading Greek tour operator participated in the gala event, supported by the Consulate General of Greece in Ukraine, cutting the Vasilopita New Year cake.
Festive event took place on the 26 January in restaurant of Mariupol city – "Mesto Vstrechi". At the beginning of the dinner guests tasted the traditional Vasilopita New Year's cake. The lucky one, who had found the hidden coin, received a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 tablet from Piraeus Bank.
The tradition of cutting the New Year's pie goes back to ancient time. Vasilopita is cut right after the New Year arrival, at the end of festive table when the entire family exchanges New Year's wishes. As soon as the clock strikes twelve, the light is switched off and in a minute it is switched on again. Everyone greets each other, saying, «χρόνια πολλά», which means long life, and «και ευτυχισμένο το νέο έτος», Happy New Year. And it is when Vasilopita, the Greek New Year's cake, appears and the master crosses the cake 3 times with a knife, cuts it into triangular pieces, offering it to each member of the family, friends and relatives. Distinctive feature of this tradition is that people examine their luck with a coin and trying to predict what the next year will bring to them. Anyone who gets the coin is considered to be the lucky one and have a good luck next year.
